A natural shampoo can make a huge difference to your hair care routine. Whilst shampoo is often one of the forgotten hair products, it’s really crucial in keeping your hair clean and nourished.
However, if you’re using a harsh shampoo on your hair (aka one that’s full of sulphates, parabens and chemicals!) then your hair will become dry and brittle. To help you avoid this, we’re running through the top reasons that you should cleanse your hair the way that mother nature intended – with a natural shampoo.
Firstly, what is a natural shampoo?
Natural shampoos have hit the headlines recently and are becoming more and more popular, but what actually constitutes a ‘natural shampoo’?
Well, a natural shampoo refers to a cleanser for the hair that doesn’t contain as pollutants or chemicals, and is full of natural goodness instead.
The best way to explain what a natural shampoo is, is by explaining what it’s not. So, here are some the nasty ingredients that are often found in high street shampoos that wouldn’t be found in a natural shampoo:
- Mineral Oil
- Synthetic Colour
- Plastic Microbeads
- Artificial Fragrance
Why are these chemicals bad for your hair?
When you look down that list, you will probably notice that the shampoo you use at present contains a few, if not all of those ingredients. So why should you cut back on those and swap to a natural shampoo?
Take a look at what some of those ingredients do to the hair:
These guys dry your hair and scalp out and are harsh on the skin. They clean the hair by taking away the natural oils that are necessary to keep your hair and scalp moisturised, which can cause dry hair and skin irritation.
Parabens have been linked to cancer and reproduction issues, and it’s predicted that they disrupt hormone function. They are so strong, that they have been found in the bodies of sea creatures who have ingested them as a result of our consumption. Not only are they bad for our health, they’re bad for the environment too.
PEGs are a strong group of chemicals that are used to stabilise other ingredients. Studies have shown that PEGs affect the nervous system negatively and some variants are carcinogens.
Silicones are what give your hair that lovely shine. Lovely, apart from the fact that it’s fake and is used to disguise brittle hair with a layer of silicon. This silicon then stops any natural moisture getting into the hair, thereby drying your hair out.
Artificial fragrances penetrate the skin with toxic substances and can cause scalp dryness and irritation. Don’t panic though, shampoo can still smell amazing with natural, non-toxic ingredients.
