In recent years, the rise of Sulphate-Free products has put sulphates on people’s agenda. Before that, they were pretty much in every product in hair-care and you couldn’t avoid cleansing your hair with sulphates. But what are they, and why are they so bad for your hair?

We’re taking a closer look at what sulphates are, what they do to your hair and why we believe in sulphate free shampoo.

What Are Sulphates?

Before we knew as much as we do now about hair-care, sulphates were the go to ingredient used to keep your tresses clean. Sulphates attract both oil and water to strip the hair of dirt and dead skin and reveal clean hair.

Sulphates are effective and safe when used in body and hair cleaning products, however they separate oil from the hair which isn’t always great for its condition. When you wash away oil completely, your hair can become dry…

Sulphates are synthetic and bad for the environment

Sulphates are not a natural ingredient and therefore have to be manufactured in order to be brought to market in the first place. In the case of sulphates this production involves Palm Oil. In order to facilitate its mass production, planting of palm trees displaces the habitats and tropical forests that would grow in its place.

Our products are made with natural ingredients that are good for your body and the planet. We’d love to use 100% natural origin products, and at 99% we’re not doing badly. Whilst we do use Palm Oil, it comes from a sustainable source that doesn’t harm the environment.

Why Are Sulphates Bad For You?

Sulphates have had bad press for a number of reasons, foremost of which is how harsh they are. Here are the main reasons that you should avoid sulphates in your hair products.

They can make your hair lose its shine.

Most shampoos are marketed as shine promoting, when in reality the sulphates in them can dry your hair out and dull its shine. Sulphates can be bad for your hair’s condition, growth and shine as they strip your hair of natural oils that it needs to look healthy.

They can cause irritation

If you develop a rash on your scalp, or find dry skin patches on your body after using a sulphate shampoo, then you could be using chemicals that are too harsh on your skin.

Most people will find that their skin can cope with the harshness of sulphates, but that their scalp and hair is just a little dry from time to time. However, for those who have sensitive skin, sulphates can cause irritation to the scalp.

Why Are Sulphates Found In Shampoo?

Sulphates are nearly always found in highstreet shampoos because they’re what makes shampoo lather properly. They’re also are a detergent that wipes away dirt and grime from your hair and skin, giving you the super clean feeling you expect from a shampoo.

However, sulphates aren’t the only ingredient that can provide that lather and clean feeling. There are many natural ingredients that can be gentler on the skin and are more sustainable than sulphates.

Our ingredients are natural and include avocado, coconut and almond to cleanse and nourish the hair as opposed to stripping it of natural oils. Almond is great for adding shine and strength to the hair and is naturally rich in omega 6 and 9 fatty acids. Coconut contains lauric acid that has a low molecular weight and is able to penetrate the hair without leaving it heavy. And lastly, avocado, which is found in oil form in our conditioner, is high in vitamins A, D and E, which have natural healing qualities.

We believe in natural, sulphate-free shampoo that looks after the hair as it cleans. If you’re looking for the perfect sulphate-free shampoo, take a look at our hair boost shampoo – a daily shampoo that lifts the hair and leaves it shiny and soft without using any sulphates, parabens or artificial fragrances.
